Chess is the classic two-player strategy game played on an 8x8 board of 64 squares. Each side commands sixteen pieces — a king, a queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns — and the goal is to trap the enemy king in checkmate. The rules are compact, but the game has rewarded study for centuries, and a single sharp idea can decide an entire match.

Why Play Chess Here

Everything runs right in your browser. There is no app to install and no account to create — open the page, the pieces are set, and you close the tab when you are done. It works the same on a phone, a tablet or a desktop.

You can play solo against the computer at four strengths — from a gentle Easy up to a demanding Master engine — pass-and-play with a friend on one screen, or open an online room and invite someone with a single link. Legal moves are highlighted when you pick up a piece, the last move and any check are shown clearly, and an undo button and a hint help you learn as you go.

How to Play Chess Online

Pick a mode: play against the AI at easy, medium, hard or Master, or choose same-device two-player. White always moves first.

Click one of your pieces to select it, and the squares it can legally move to are marked with dots — a ring means a capture. Click a highlighted square to move there. When a pawn reaches the far rank, a small menu lets you promote it to a queen, rook, bishop or knight.

How the Pieces Move

The pawn advances one square (or two from its starting row) and captures diagonally. The knight jumps in an L-shape and is the only piece that leaps over others. The bishop slides any distance on diagonals, the rook along ranks and files, and the queen combines both as the most powerful piece.

The king moves one square in any direction and must always be protected. Two special moves are worth knowing: castling, where the king and a rook move together for safety, and en passant, a situational pawn capture. Our board enforces every rule for you, including check, so you can focus on the plan rather than the legality.

Strategy for Beginners

Open by developing your knights and bishops toward the center and getting your king to safety with castling — try not to move the same piece twice or bring the queen out too early. Control of the central squares gives your pieces more range and more options.

Before every move, ask what your opponent is threatening. Look for pieces you can capture for free, watch for forks and pins, and trade when you are ahead in material. In the endgame, push passed pawns and use your king actively once the queens are gone.

Tips to Improve Faster

  • Develop a new piece on most opening moves and castle early to keep your king safe.
  • Fight for the four central squares — central pieces are stronger pieces.
  • Always check what your opponent's last move attacks before you reply.
  • Look for knight forks and bishop or rook pins to win material.
  • Use the hint button to compare your idea with the engine's best move, then try Hard and Master as you improve.
