Ludo is the beloved roll-and-move race game descended from the ancient Indian game Pachisi. Two to four players each control four tokens of one colour, and the goal is simple: be the first to move all four tokens from your base, all the way around the track, and safely into your home column. Everything hinges on the dice — you need a 6 to launch a token, every roll of 6 earns another turn, and landing on an opponent sends their token all the way back to start. It is quick to learn, endlessly replayable, and famous for last-second swings of luck.

Why Play Ludo Here

Everything runs right in your browser. There's no app to install and no account to create — open the page, the board is ready, and you close the tab when you're done. It plays the same on a phone, tablet, or desktop, and your win record is stored locally.

Play solo against the computer at four strengths, pass-and-play with 2, 3, or 4 people on one screen, or open an online room and invite someone with a single link. Tap Roll, then tap the token you want to move — legal tokens pulse, captures fire automatically, and a 6 lets you roll again.

The Rules in One Minute

Each player starts with four tokens in their base. On your turn you roll one die. You can only move a token out of the base by rolling a 6; otherwise you move a token already on the track forward by the number shown.

Tokens travel clockwise around the shared ring and then up their own colour's home column. You must roll the exact number to land a token on the final home square. If you land on a square occupied by a single opponent token — and it isn't a safe star square — that token is captured and goes back to its base. Roll a 6 (or capture, or send a token home) and you take another turn. The first player to get all four tokens home wins.

Safe Squares and Captures

The coloured starting squares and the eight star squares are safe: tokens resting there can never be captured, so they're natural places to pause when danger is near. Everywhere else on the shared ring is open ground.

Capturing is the heart of Ludo's tension. Sending an opponent's leading token back to base can erase a dozen squares of progress in an instant, and the bonus turn you earn for a capture often lets you press the advantage. But chasing captures can leave your own tokens exposed — good players balance aggression with keeping pieces on safe squares.

Strategy for Beginners

Spread your tokens out rather than racing a single one home; having several tokens active gives you more options for every roll and more chances to capture. When you roll a 6, weigh bringing a new token into play against advancing one that's already in danger.

Keep an eye on opponents sitting one-to-six squares behind your tokens — that's capture range. Park on safe stars when you can, push a token into the home column where it can't be touched, and remember you need the exact roll to finish, so plan the last few squares carefully.

Tips to Improve Faster

  • You need a 6 to leave base, so get tokens out early to stay flexible.
  • Every 6 — plus captures and reaching home — earns another roll; chain them.
  • Rest on coloured start squares and star squares to avoid being captured.
  • Capturing a leading enemy token is often worth more than racing ahead.
  • Watch for opponents one to six squares behind you; that's their strike range.
  • You must roll the exact number to bring a token home — count the last steps.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many players can play Ludo?

Two to four. Choose Solo vs AI to play against the computer, or Same Device to pass and play with 2, 3 or 4 people on one screen.

Why can't I move my token?

Tokens leave the base only on a roll of 6. If all your tokens are still in the base and you don't roll a 6, your turn passes.

How does capturing work?

Land on a square holding a single opponent token that isn't a safe star square, and that token returns to its base. You also earn a bonus roll for the capture.

What happens when I roll a 6?

You may bring a new token onto the board or advance one already in play, and you immediately roll again. Three 6s in a row, however, forfeits the turn.

Can I play Ludo against the computer?

Yes. Pick Solo vs AI and choose easy, medium, hard or Master. The AI prioritises captures, safety and finishing tokens.
