Mancala is one of the oldest families of board games in the world, played for thousands of years across Africa, Asia and the Middle East. This version uses the popular Kalah rules on a wooden board with six pits per player and a store at each end. On your turn you pick up all the seeds from one of your pits and drop them one by one into the following pits, moving counter-clockwise and skipping your opponent's store. Land your last seed in your store and you move again; land in an empty pit on your side with seeds across from you and you capture them. When one side runs out of seeds, the game ends and whoever has more in their store wins.

Why Play Mancala Here

Everything runs right in your browser. There is no app to install and no account to create — open the page, the board is set, and you tap a pit to sow. It plays the same on a phone, tablet or desktop, and your session record is stored locally.

Play solo against the computer at four strengths, pass-and-play with a friend on one screen, or open an online room and invite someone with a single link. The board uses a warm wood look with teal and cream seeds; your store sits on your right, and legal pits glow when it is your turn.

The Rules in One Minute

Each player starts with four seeds in each of their six pits. On your turn, choose a non-empty pit on your side, pick up all its seeds, and sow them one at a time into the next pits counter-clockwise, skipping the opponent's store.

If your last seed lands in your store, you take another turn immediately. If it lands in an empty pit on your side and the opposite pit has seeds, you capture those seeds plus your last one into your store. When one player's pits are all empty, remaining seeds on the other side go into that player's store; whoever has more seeds in their store wins.

Captures and Extra Turns

Extra turns are powerful — chaining several store landings in one round can swing the game. Look for pits where the seed count wraps exactly into your store, especially when you can follow up with a capture on the next move.

Captures require an empty pit on your side and seeds in the pit directly opposite. You do not capture when landing in the opponent's pits, even if they are empty. Planning sowing paths that set up captures without leaving easy counters is the heart of strong play.

Strategy for Beginners

Early on, prefer moves that add seeds to your store or set up future extra turns rather than scattering stones randomly. Count how many seeds you pick up and where the last one will fall before you click.

Try to keep seeds on your side so you still have moves when the endgame approaches. Emptying your side too early can hand the opponent a huge final sweep. Strong players think several sowing cycles ahead, not just the current capture.

Tips to Improve Faster

  • Count seeds before you sow — know where your last stone will land.
  • Extra turns from landing in your store are often worth more than a small capture.
  • Set up captures by leaving an empty pit with seeds still on the opposite side.
  • Do not empty your side too early; you may lose the final sweep.
  • Watch for moves that give the opponent an easy extra turn or capture.
  • In the endgame, make the opponent open their side first when you can.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you win at Mancala?

Have more seeds in your store when the game ends. The game ends when one player's pits are empty; remaining seeds on the other side are collected into that player's store.

Do I get an extra turn?

Yes. If your last sown seed lands in your own store, you immediately take another turn.

When can I capture?

When your last seed lands in an empty pit on your side and the pit directly opposite (on the opponent's side) still has seeds. You capture those seeds plus your last one into your store.

Can I play Mancala against the computer?

Yes. Choose Solo vs AI and pick easy, medium, hard or Master. Stronger levels search ahead for extra turns, captures and endgame sweeps.
